Basic Guide for Optus D2 Satellite Installation

There are six steps you will need to follow to successfully install a satellite system to view Amazing Discoveries.

1. DETERMINE THE BEST SITE FOR THE DISH

   a) The position needs to be as close as possible to the TV and for roofs over 18 degree pitch, the mounting is best to face over the gutter and not up the incline of the roof.

   b) If you live in western Australia, the dish will face north-east. The further east you live in Australia, the more north the dish will face. The direction in New Zealand is north westerly. You must have an unobstructed view to the sky at the correct degree of elevation for your location. If you are in a built up area, look around and see if there are any Foxtel/Austar dishes and check for their direction.

   c) Consider the easiest route for the cable and adjust dish location as required.

2. FIX GUTTER OR TIN ROOF MOUNTING BRACKET

   a) Follow the installation instructions that come with your mounting bracket.

   b) IMPORTANT! Mounting pole must be as close to vertical as possible. Use a level to ensure this is done properly.

   c) Do not use less fixing bolts or tek screws than is shown in the instructions.

   d) Pre-drill holes if near the edge or end of rafters to prevent the wood from splitting.

3. ASSEMBLE THE DISH

   a) Follow the installation instructions that come with your satellite dish.

   b) The LNBF cable connection point needs to face at 7:30 on a clock face.

   c) Grease the four clamping bolts (the long ones) that clamp the dish to the pole.

   d) Set the angle indicator on the dish mounting bracket to the corresponding elevation degree for your area (the further north you are, the higher the angle; the further south, the lower the angle).

   e) Once the dish is assembled, attach it to the mounting pole on the roof.

4. RUN CABLE (RG6 TRI-SHIELD WITH “F” TYPE CONNECTORS)

   a) Run cable from dish to TV according to the type of house you have – timber, double brick, brick veneer.

   b) IMPORTANT! Keep satellite cable free from contact with any electrical cabling.

   c) Follow existing TV antenna cable through the wall if possible. Drill a 7.5mm hole in the wall plate and bring the cable through that hole with sufficient length to reach the satellite receiver box easily.

   d) Fit screw on “F” type connector to complete cabling, connecting to LNBF and receiver LNB “IN” point.

5. CONNECT SATELLITE RECEIVER BOX TO VCR OR TV

   a) i. Using AV cables, connect to satellite receiver box, making sure you follow the colour coding of the connection ends ie: red/white (audio) and yellow(video) for stereo video or white/yellow for mono connection.

   ii. Connect the receiver to the VCR “in” and from the VCR “out” to the TV AV1 or AV2 “in”.

   OR
   

   b) i. Using RF cables, connect the existing TV antenna cable to the back of the satellite receiver RF “in” socket.

   ii. Connect the RF cable from the RF “out” socket on the receiver to the VCR RF “in” socket and from the VCR RF “out” socket to the TV antenna “in”.

   iii. Both the TV and VCR must be individually tuned to the satellite receiver frequency.

6. PROGRAMM RECEIVER

   a) Program your satellite receiver according to the instructions for your receiver.

   b) Now is the time you tune in the satellite dish by looking for the satellite. If you do not have a satellite finder or similar equipment, one person must be moving the satellite dish while another is watching the TV screen. Both people need to be able to hear each other or you can set up the system on the roof using the receiver and a small TV. Tune the satellite to the greatest number of green blocks or highest percentage, depending on the type of receiver you are using. Then lock off the dish and follow the downloading instructions for your particular receiver to download and save the channels from the satellite. A new screen will appear with a list of downloaded channels. Amazing Discoveries must be listed or you are on the wrong satellite and must look again for Optus D2.

   Save the downloaded channels according to your receiver’s instructions and press “exit” or “back” on the remote control until all the menu screens have disappeared on the TV screen.

   Search through the channels to find Amazing Discoveries. You can now delete or move channels according the instructions in the booklet for your receiver.

Dish Pointing

Are you trying to install a satellite dish but don’t know where to point the dish? Go to http://www.dishpointer.com and you will find the information you need. When you go into the home page, choose the satellite you are trying to locate. Optus D2 is at 152 degrees E so scroll up the list to find it. Next, enter the address at which you are completing the installation, then press go. A satellite picture will appear with a tear/drop shaped cursor, which should be located on the address you typed in. If the tear/drop needs to be moved, you can place your mouse cursor on it, left click and hold, then move the cursor to where you want it to be before letting go of the mouse button. You can zoom in closer to actually pinpoint the building you want.

You will need the Elevation (how high the dish points into the sky), the magnetic Azimuth (point on the compass), and the LNB which is how far to rotate the LNB in its holder. In the West of Australia, the cable attachment on the LNB should be facing almost straight down while the further east you go, the attachment position rotates further clockwise. In the east of Australia, it is around 45 degrees from straight down while it gets closer to the horizontal in New Zealand. You can gently fine tune that rotation to get the highest reading in the area where you live. We trust this will help you.

The parameters below are Optus D2 approximations for each location.

Setup for ST Gold Satellite Receiver

NOTE! First check to see if the receiver is factory preset to include Optus D2 by following steps 1 to 4.

1. With the remote control, press Menu button and the MAIN MENU will appear on the TV screen.
2. User Preference, press Okay.
3. #4Edit Sat press Okay, type in password “0000”, press Okay.
4. Look for Optus D2 at 152.0 by scrolling down the satellite list.
   
   If it is there, go straight to section ** below.
5. If not, go to Add, press Okay.
6. Pos, type in 1520, press Okay and 152.0’Ku??? will appear. Press Okay.
7. Edit, press Okay and type in OPTUS D2 using the on screen keyboard.
8. Done, press Okay and 152.0’ OPTUS D2 will be added to left screen.
9. Transponder on right. Press Okay.
10. Add, press Okay, then add Freq - 12608, Pol - Horizontal, SR - 22500, CR - 3/4.
11. Exit and Okay to save the information.
    
    ** Exit and back to Main Menu.
12. Installation, press Okay, enter password “0000”.
13. Dish setup. Press the right arrow button and choose OPTUS D2 from the right side column. Press Okay to load it into the left column. This column should read Dish – 1; Sat - 152.0’ Ku OPTUS D2; Transp - 12546V 22500 3/4; LNB power - 13/18v; LNB Type - 10700 or 11300 (look on LNBF. Melbourne Satellites provide 11300 LNBF’s).
    The last 3 should read OFF, NONE & NONE.
14. Exit and Okay to save the information.
15. #3 Scan Transponder and check that information is correct for OPTUS D2 (as input above). Signal Strength Bar should have a %age reading and the Signal Quality will be 0%.
16. Now find the Satellite and aim to get the highest Signal Quality % level you can, then press Okay to download the channels followed by a second OK to save the information.
17. Exit a few times until a picture appears and find Amazing Discoveries by using the up and down arrow buttons on the receiver remote control.
18. You can edit TV Channels by going back to User Preference, press Okay and go to Edit Channel. You can delete the channels you don't want to keep. Also, you can move Amazing Discoveries to channel one position.

Sun Interference with Satellite Signals

Satellite transmissions are subject to solar interference twice a year during the equinoxes and this is an unavoidable situation. The solar interference affects communication satellites, which pass in front of the sun for a few minutes each day for several days straight around the time of the equinoxes. The exact dates vary depending on where the satellite is in the sky relative to the site where the signal is being downloaded. This outage occurs because the sun produces massive amounts of microwave radiation that overwhelms the microwave signal coming from the satellite, thus interrupting the signal coming into the satellite dishes.

Solar interference only affects the signal quality for a few moments to begin with at around the same time each day, for several days, with the interference getting longer and more pronounced. Then after a few days it gradually improves until the interference ends completely. The length of time the interference lasts can be affected by the viewer’s own dish set up and the strength of the satellite signal.

Below are the expected times for solar interference on the Optus D2 satellites for Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea during March/April 2012.

Please note: The following information is a guide only. Exact times for temporary signal degradation have not been given as there are too many variables such as dish size, exact location of satellite dish, and changes in daylight saving, etc., which affect the times for any given location and dish set up.
