OTTAWA -- Science minister Gary Goodyear now says he believes in evolution.
"Of course I do," he told guest host Jane Taber during an appearance on the CTV program Power Play. "But it is an irrelevant question."
That's a different answer from the one Mr. Goodyear, a chiropractor and Minister of State for Science and Technology, gave The Globe and Mail when he was asked the same thing during an interview for a story that was published in Tuesday's paper.
This is Mr. Goodyear's answer to the problems that were caused by yesterday's article, which we posted
HERE. However, Mr. Goodyear's answer to critics comes with a little twist. This was his complete answer, "We are evolving every year, every decade. That's a fact, whether it is to the intensity of the sun, whether it is to, as a chiropractor, walking on cement versus anything else, whether it is running shoes or high heels, of course we are evolving to our environment." Mr. Goodyear uses the word "evolving" to mean change or adaptation which takes place all the time. This does not indicate that he believes in the theory of evolution which Darwin proposed in the Origin of Species which refers to the origin of living things and not the change that people go through in a lifetime. Mr. Goodyear seems to be playing it safe and couching his words carefully in an attempt to stay true to his own beliefs as well as calm the storm stirred up by his creationist convictions. Let's pray that he does not succumb altogether to denying his faith as he tries to walk the fine line of political correctness and standing for principle.
