Pope Benedict XVI on Monday received the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's director general Irina Bokova, the Vatican said in a statement. Education, protecting world cultural heritage and the environment as well as intercultural dialogue were high on the agenda during Bokova's visit to the Holy See.
Bokova also met the Vatican's second-in-command, secretary of state Tarcisio Bertone and its secretary for relations with states Dominique Mamberti.
"The cordial discussions provided an opportunity for a fruitful exchange of opinions on UNESCO's efforts in the field of education, sciences and culture, which are also of particular interest to the Holy See as it participates actively in the work of the organisation," the Vatican said in a statement.
Bokova, a Bulgarian, was in October 2010 awarded an honorary degree from the northern Italian city of Milan's Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.
